Deaf pupil 's first time pass with Harding School of
Motoring
It was a very proud and satisfactory moment when our first deaf pupil (who was
very nervous when she first came to us), passed first time! Both the Instructor and pupil felt a great sense of
achievement which makes the job of teaching people to drive very much worthwhile.
Full Story - On our first meeting Jen was dubious about whether or not she would
be able to learn how to drive. However, with encouragement from a friend
the two of us encouraged her to give it a go. At the end of the day, what
did she have to lose?
Jen was profoundly deaf and therefore didn't use a hearing aid.
Communication on the 'go' could be a problem as even though Jen could sign, I
could not. Luckily she could lip read, so by instructing me to speak
clearly and with some carefully positioned extra mirrors, the agreed hand
signals, the partnership began. Needless to say my drawing skills improved
as my explanations of how to control the car, its road position and when and
where to look had to visually, get the message across.
Teaching Jen how to drive has made me a better instructor as I had to think
quicker and on a different level on how to make my instructions simple to
understand. I enjoyed the experience as it had the reward of seeing Jen's
face when she received her pass certificate on her first attempt.
